While thoughts of the Southwest conjure up images of desert landscapes and painted skies, how those tones and textures play out in the homes of that region are changing. Homeowners in that area are leaning decidedly more modern for kitchens, and personal style is reflected in everything from cabinet styles to backsplashes.
“When we first started 14 years ago in Austin there was definitely more of a Southwest aesthetic, with lots of rustic woods like alder and hickory,” offers Adam Johnston, owner, UB Kitchens, in Austin, TX. “We have had a front seat to the evolution of Austin and, with all of the transplants from the coasts and the growth of digital platforms like Houzz and Pinterest, there really isn’t a specific aesthetic that defines Austin or the Southwest as a whole.”
With that being said, Johnston believes that, overall, people in this area of the country are more interested in a cleaner, simpler aesthetic, “although we still have people come in for something more traditional like inset cabinets,” he adds.
“We have really seen the market move towards frameless cabinets in Austin,” continues Johnston. “Customers who prefer clean lines really love how much tighter the reveals are on frameless cabinets and how the overall look just feels a little bit more sophisticated.”
